Location of the Site: Cheetah Camp, Trombay

Area of intervention: Toilet-Balwadi-Path Lab

The deep narrow wells formed between two columns of houses provide comfort to the women of the community to meet and gossip due to the overlapping eyes on the streets and the stretch of the sight lines which are more intense in the ‘galis’. Further, due to the compactness, the multiple affordances of the staircase were seen mainly in terms of storage and seating spaces.

The site being very compact allows stairs to be used in multiplicity. The most common ones being: seating spaces ( to view the surrounding activities or to engage with people without crossing the threshold of the houses) and storage spaces ( to grow plants, to stack shoes, to keep objects used to clean the house)

The sight lines are expressed using colors to demarket gender and line weights signify  the type of sight. I have taken the conjectures to derive at multiple faceted forms placed according to the requirement of program in small pockets.

After choosing the path of the site lines that can enter the space, multiple forms at various places across the site were achieved. The space requirement of each exiting program on site and new additional programs the spatial layout was decided. The materials were chosen according to the available and the most used as well as economically cheaper was taken into consideration in order to make these forms into structures. The materials were mainly brick, metal sheets, grills and multicolored tiles.
